A 2-day sensitization on Drug use, drug prevention, treatment and care (DPTC) for the administrative staff, program officers, and all staff involved in project implementation at JDPC, Jos.

Khirana Healthcare and JDPC has established an enduring partnership which has continued to yield impactful outcomes across several thematic areas of both organisations. Following a needs assessment and the identification of gaps within project objectives with drug use associated components, the initiative to build the capacity of JDPC on DPTC became imperative. Between the 25th -26th of August, 2022, the Khirana Healthcare team facilitated a 2-days sensitization on DPTC for the Administrative staff, program officers, and all staff involved in project implementation at JDPC, Jos.

The goal of this capacity building training is to enhance the competence of the staff of JDPC in disseminating information on drug related issues to the general public that will consequently reduce stigma associated to problematic drug users. This is critical to the important work JDPC does that focuses on community reconciliation as a transformational tool, which especially targets the youth as elemental characters in this peace-building processes. A total of 25 staff of JDPC, Jos were trained on this module.

Evident from the aggregated results of the preliminary and post assessments conducted during the training, there was an overall significant knowledge gain. Prior to the training, only 35% of the participants understood that Drug dependency is not a result of lack of will power and overall moral weakness. Post training, 83.3% of the participants were convinced that drug dependency is a chronic brain disease and not a situation of moral failure. There was an extensive debate between participants and trainers about this subject. This provided an opportunity to educate the participants on the nature of the disease, and its manifestation as a maladaptive behavioural syndrome, hence the premise that facilitated the demythyfication of such an ideology/perception.

This workshop also served as a catalyst for the JDPC management to consider expanding its thematic areas, to include drug sensitization and prevention, and consequently the portfolio to align with the project plans of global organizations working in drug related areas.

In furtherance to our partnership goals, Khirana Healthcare provided technical support for ongoing TEARFUND, Christian Rural and Urban Development Association of Nigeria (CRUDAN), as well as the Scripture of West African (SUWA) projects implemented by JDPC. These projects were all geared towards peacebuilding, violent conflict resolution and mitigating the root cause of the volatility of affected communities-with substance use as a primary factor.

Khirana healthcare and Social enterprise is an organization with an ambitious mission: to positively impact the lives of individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa affected by drugs and associated problems.
